OBERKALBACH, HESSEN, GERMANY
Village of My Berthold and Ullrich Ancestors INCLUDES INFORMATION ABOUT SURROUNDING VILLAGES Oberkalbach is a village 10 miles south of Fulda in a beautiful area known as the Rhoen. The lovely rolling hills, little forests, brooks, meadows and farmers’ fields surrounding small villages create a picturesque setting. Oberkalbach was the birthplace of my mother. I never lived there but I often visited my grandparents and extended family there as a child before I left my homeland to live in the United States. Over many years, I have collected information about this village and those in the surrounding area. This web site is my way of sharing some of this information with others whose ancestors came from this part of Germany. Formerly these villages were in county Schluechtern but today some are designated in the county of Fulda. |
Other villages in the old county Schluechtern, mostly south and west of Oberkalbach, are: Ahlersbach, Altengronau, Bellings, Breitenbach, Breunings, Eichenried, Elm, Gundhelm, Herolz, Heubach, Hintersteinau, Hohenzell, Hutten, Jossa, Klosterhoefe, Kressenbach, Marjoss, Mittelkalbach, Mottgers, Niederkalbach, Niederzell, Neuengronau, Oberzell, Ramholz, Schluechtern, Schwarzenfels, Seidenroth, Steinau, Sterbfritz, Uttrichshausen, Veitsteinbach, Vollmerz, Wallroth, Weichersbach, Weiperz, and Zuentersbach. These villages share much of the same history and customs, and many of their residents intermarried, resulting in similar surnames throughout the area. |
Towns and villages of former County (Kreis) Schluechtern and county seat Schluechtern. Those places marked with a black dot had a civil office where residents applied for permission to marry. They then married in their village churches. The residents of the other villages went to the closest office to apply. The Family History Library has microfilms of these marriage protocols.
