OBERKALBACH, HESSEN, GERMANY Village of My Berthold and Ullrich Ancestors Includes Information about Surrounding Villages Genealogical Records LAND HOLDERS in 1596 The church records kept in the village churches in this area were destroyed in the 30-Years War 1618 to 1648. This list of Oberkalbach land holders survived the war. These individuals were serfs under the House of Brandenstein. They worked the land and were allowed to keep part of the crops for their own use. In 1654, there were 34 households in Oberkalbach. Before the 30-Year War, which lasted from 1618 to 1648, there had been 70 househol ds. That gives us an idea of the destructiveness of this long war. The following is a list of heads of households, as noted in the book Berkwinkel Chronik: Henn Altbrand Hans Baus Klas Boehm Kaspar Breuninger Henn Dorn, miller Joerg Emmrich, councilman Hans Foeller Simon Foeller, minstrel Hans Frischkorn, church elder and juryman Ulrich Gaertner, forest ranger and minstrel Andreas Heil Niclas Hiltmann Adam Jost Hans Jost, blacksmith Peter Koch, blacksmith Andreas Kraushaar, schoolmaster Doenges Kraushaar Klas Kraushaar, councilman Quirin Kress Hans Lins Peter Lins Adam Ludwig Klas Ruebsam Hans Schaefer, mayor Konrad Scheibner, blacksmith Henn Schmidt Klas Schmidt, councilman Hans Schultess Hans Ulrich, farmer, and juryman Klas Ulrich, councilman Heinrich Wachsmann, farmer Klas Wehner, cartwright Hans Weininger Heintz Will OBERKALBACH PARISH RECORDS 1654 to 1900 When I began genealogical research into my Berthold and Ullrich families, I was fortunate to have a solid beginning. As a result of Adolph Hitler's requirement for Germans to prove their genealogical heritage for 4 generations, my mother had a typewritten record of 4 generations of her ancestors. In the 1960's, I corresponded with the Lutheran pastor of Oberkalbach in an attempt to extend beyond the information I had. Rumor had it that the church records were burned during WW II. Fortunately, this proved to be a false rumor. Actually, some of the civil records in the area had been burned, but the church records were intact. The pastor was cooperative in sending me another generation to extend my pedigree, but that was the extent of his willingness to spend his time on my genealogy. I'm sure he had more pressing work to do. Since the Genealogical Society of Utah had not been allowed by the Lutheran Church archives to microfilm the church records for the Oberkalbach area, my research came to a screeching halt. Many years passed. In fact, it was 30 years before the magic of the internet opened new doors for me. Having signed onto the internet in January 1996, I received an unexpected e-mail in February from Germany from a cousin I had not seen since 1975. We began to correspond, which eventually led to his making some inquiries for me in Oberkalbach. He found that the parish records beginning in 1654 had been abstracted by a number of volunteers under the direction of the pastor and were in book form, available for purchase. At long last, a way to continue my research! My cousin was able to purchase the books of births/baptisms, marriages and deaths for me. Many of my ancestors were in this village from the beginning of the records. I extracted a total of over 100 families - 1200 individuals! Upon my request, the pastor with the approval of the town council, gave written permission for the Family History Library to microfilm these records. The microfilm number is 1183734. The records are at the Family History Library catalog as microfilms not yet viewable online. These records also include marriage records for the villages of Heubach and Uttrichshausen, but not the births/baptisms or the death for those two villages. * * * * * I would be happy to do a lookup for you if you have an ancestor in any of these 3 villages. * * * * * SURNAMES IN THE OBERKALBACH CHURCH BOOKS Following is a list of surnames in the birth/christening books, followed by the earliest year in which the name first appears in the books from the year 1654.
